Abbae de Flavignas: I enjoy a sweet trip through history.

In 1592, Abbae de Flavignas candies changed the way they make there candies, switching from cane sugar to sugar beet.  I recently tried three flavors of this "new" recipe a couple weeks ago.

The flavors I ate were anise, orange, and violet.  As far as taste goes, violet a lot better than I thought and my favorite.  The anise hit the hardest and was pretty good. Orange?  No.  All of the candies are rock hard, but fun to roll around on your tongue.

Truth be told, the candy eating part of this candy experience was the least interesting part for me.  Please read that year I mentioned in the first paragraph again "1592.". I discovered that when I checked out a website for the candy. I really encourage everyone to check out the story of this candy. I believe it will bring a smile to your face.

You Against Me (book review)

You Against me opens by opens with a family in chaos. Parents are absent, literally and figuratively. A sister suffers as a victim. The younger sister doesn't understand, and a brother struggles to hold it all together. While trying to comfort the victim, the brother promises revenge on the Boy that hurt her.  The declaration brings comfort to the victim, so the brother sets off to stomp that evil Boy that hurt his sister.
When the brother arrives at the boy's house, the sister of the Boy answers the door. A sister that admires her brother. A sister that doesn't, can't believe her brother is possible of such a horrible crime.  This is where our story really gets going.

The book focused on two characters. The brother of the victim and the sister of the accused.
The boy seemed to be a little bit of a cliche to me written for the book's targeted female readers: Poor, but selfless and thoughtful, a couple of vices to give him an edge, and every girl throwing their bodies at him.  Most of the growth experienced by the character, happened before the opening of the book and told to the reader through exposition. I get the point of this type of character, but I thought it was a bit overdone for this type of book.

The sister shines as a character in this book. Her insecurities make her really endearing. She's a little tough to talk about without hinting at spoilers.

As for the plot, at Its core this book is a love story. The thing is the two lovers are brought together by a horrible event. I mentioned earlier the book deals with some pretty major subjects, and it handles them all very well. There are no easy answers, and even though things get better, no happily ever after.  This being said, I did find the plot pretty predictable. I made some very specific guesses as to how things would go after the first chapter, and I pretty much hit it.  If you dont mind that, this book might be for you.

Recommend:  Yes if you like contemporary YA novels.

Age: 16 and up.  There are scences and dialogue of a sexual nature.

Glass Mask anime (review)

Glass Mask is a shoujo anime based on a long running manga. It's the story of a poor clumsy girl (Maya Kitajima) with a love for acting and the theater.  One day a former diva brilliant actress (Chigusa Tsukikaga) spots Maya play acting. The older lady is enamored by Maya's natural talent and ends up mentoring her.

Maya grows as an actress and a person. A rival rises.  Romance steps in to her life. All the classic troupes of a shoujo anime are here.

Plotwise this anime is pretty great most of the way through. The last couple episodes fall off which left a pretty bitter taste though.

The characters pretty much fit their marks. The man, who plays the male half of the romantic tension in the story, interested me because he also kind of plays a villain. My favorite character is probably the rival (Ayumi Himekawa) For most of the story, she is displayed as an actress with a lot of integrity and strong work ethic. I rooted for her over Maya quite a bit.

Overall a pretty good show, but the last 2-3 episodes do fall apart. If you find you like this check out the manga it's based on. The Glass Mask manga debuted in 1976 and is still going.

Hard Milk Candy

I tried my first international candy.  I ordered something called hard milk candy from Japan.

I have to admit I was really excited when I saw the parcel. First, I ripped away the box to get to the candy package. When I held it my hand, I studied it all over. The Japanese print made me a little more giddy than it should have, I think. I tore off a label sticker on the back that contained nutritional information in English. To me, it ruined the authenticity of the package.

After marveling at the packaging, I pulled it open, carefully pulled. I did not want to damage it in anyway.

Then I grabbed one of the little candies. They're individually wrapped, so I had another package to study. Being smaller and with less print and having the candy inside, I spent less time looking over this little package.  I tore open the wrapper and took the cream colored candy in my hand. Of course I looked it over. I circled my finger over its disc shape. Then I popped it in my mouth.  First I tasted milk then a subtle sweetness hit.  I think the best comparison is condensed sweetened milk.  I found it to be a pleasant candy that got better the more I kept it in my mouth. It's definitely worth a try.

In the Garden of Beats: Love, Terror, and An American Family in Hitler's Berlin (review)

You can't tell me that's not an amazing title. I'm pretty sure just about any history buff especially one interested in American history, world war 2, European history in this time period will be at least curious about this book.
The story takes place in the early 1930s.  Hitler and the Nazis are in the midst of their climb to power.   America needs an Ambassador to represent them in Germany, but anyone qualified for the job scoffs at it.  This brings in our heros, William Dodd and his family.  Dodd was the man who eventually got the job.  He and family went to Germany and lived.

This book is very informative and gives a good view into the world at this time. However, I did not really enjoy the read. The writing was just too dry to me lacking much emotion. I also thought it focused on things of little interest a lot of the time.  If you just want to learn about this time period and the family's experience, In The Garden of Beasts is perfect for you, but to me it lacks the entertainment enjoyable read factor a good book fiction or non fiction should have.

International Candies

I've decided to order various snacks from around the world and give them a try. I've been doing a little research and have found a list of things I want to try. My only criteria was to find something not available in the United States. Right now I have twenty different countries or territories represented. I've found candies, cookies, chips, drinks, etc that I want to try. Some seem a little scary, but Im looking forward to the fun

Halloween Story

The headless horseman stopped in front of a small building. A brisk autumn wind whistled through the eyes carved in the pumpkin set atop his shoulders. He checked the address, and confirmed he was at the location of the emergency meeting. He dismounted from his steed and tied the animal to a light post. The headless horsemen entered the building and stood in a large meeting hall He walked between two columns of folding chairs to the front of the room. There two tables stood one with pamphlets, the other with a TV and DVD player that faced the chairs.  The headless horseman took off his pumpkin head and placed it on a table so it faced the TV and DVD player. The remainder of the body collapsed to the floor.

The witch showed up and leaned her broom against the wall before taking her seat.  The vampire appeared next, but he stayed in his bat form.  The mummy stomped in a little later and leaned against the wall.   One after another monster after monster came and took their seats, Frankenstein, the skeleton, the ghost, the goblin, and many more.  Soon the meeting hall was filled with all of Halloween's characters talking, moaning, and grabbing at each other. In the midst of the chatter, the vampire transformed into his human like form and with a stately gait stepped to the front of the room.  He adjusted his cape and loudly cleared his throat to get the attention of the room.  When the commotion had settled down somewhat, the vampire spoke.

"My fellow monster and creatures of the night, I know it is Halloween night, but we've gathered this evening to discuss a grave danger to us all.  I know many of us do not get along.  There are those of you that hate even me."

The werewolf howled in agreement, but the vampire just cleared his throat and continued.

"But on this night, we cohabitate peacefully. On this we are not just welcome, but we are celebrated.  On this night our talents of fright are imitated, this night, Halloween."

The monsters and ghouls responded with howls, cackles, and, bumps of celebration.

"But there is a force that is trying to take this night away from us."

This statement produced an onslaught of laughter.  The zombie slapped his knee with a hand he'd been snacking.  The whole room agreed that the thought of some force taking over Halloween was rather hilarious, but the vampire continued undeterred.

"This force is Christmas, and it is led by the all powerful omniscient Santa Claus."

The noise silenced, and the monsters gave the vampire their full attention.  Something under the bed even stirred.  Christmas and Santa were nothing to take lightly.

"What's Santa want with us?  He gets December, and our little night is a month away,” the skeleton asked.

The other monsters and ghouls agreed with this sentiment.

The vampire continued.  "Yes, that is a fine point, but apparently Santa's power over December has only wetted his appetite for more.  He stretched his empire into the end of November.  Then this happened."

The vampire turned on the TV that fronted the room and clicked play on the DVD player.

After a moment, a scene started to play out on the television.  Hundreds of turkeys walked around in a pen.  They were quite nice looking for turkeys, all round and plump with fine Turkey features and colors.  They pranced and strutted around their pen as they gobbled amongst themselves.

The camera panned over to a group of people sitting at a table.  One half of the table was dressed like pilgrims with the men in black and white clothes, buckled top hats, and buckled shoes and the women wearing white dresses and bonnets.  The other half was dressed like Indians.  (Though we now call them Native Americans.)  This side was adjourned in animal skins and moccasins with feathers sticking out from their heads.  On the table, a feast was spread.  There was corn, potatoes, pumpkins, gourds, and pies, but the center piece of the meal was a golden brown plump juicy Turkey.  All of this was surrounded by a forest decorated by orange and yellow leaves that carpeted the ground.  The whole scene played out like a perfect Thanksgiving.

Suddenly the cooked Turkey exploded into several pieces.  Immediately the pilgrims started loading their muskets, and the Indians readied their bow and arrows.  Several reindeer, mounted by flamethrower armed elves, rose above the trees, and they swooped down towards the turkeys.  The Indians were able to fire off a few arrows, but the reindeer were too swift and agile, within seconds the turkeys were bathed in flames until they were nothing but charcoal black imitations of the bird that had been featured at the feast.

Then there was silence.    The pilgrims had finally finished loading their muskets, and they searched for something to shoot.  The Indian braves peered through the tree looking ever alert, but there was nothing.

A booming laugh and its echoes filled the landscape.

"HO HO HO"

The Indians and pilgrims searched all around, but it was impossible to tell where the laughter came from.
"Papa, it's a bright red flame," said a small boy.

Everyone on screen and the camera turned toward the direction the boy pointed. A blinding red light made it almost impossible to see, and before anyone could adjust, a plump old man with a white beard riding a red nosed reindeer was upon them.  The pilgrims and Indians tried to defend themselves, but it was to no avail. The red nosed reindeer dodged each burst of buckshot and arrow, and Santa surgically eliminated each Thanksgiving character with a high powered rifle.  Within moments the pilgrims and Indians lay dead on the ground and across the table in the feast.

Rudolph landed amongst the bodies, and Santa dismounted his head reindeer.  He surveyed the carnage kicking at a few bodies, and the other elves and reindeer landed in a sort of circle around him.  They watched as Santa climbed on the table, looked around, and waved his arm over his head in a wide circular motion.  In a flash the entire landscape was blanketed with snow, and the once colorful trees transformed into evergreens.

The last thing the creatures of Halloween heard before the vampire stopped the video was the elves shouting, "Christmas forever!"

The monsters were silent for a moment.  Then the mummy's moan interrupted the tension.

"We've got magic too," the witch said.  "Let them attack.  What I concoct with my brew will push them back."

The other monsters made noises of agreement that grew with their confidence.  The vampire banged his hands on the table to capture the room's attention again.

"It is true, we are powerful," he said.

The monsters erupted in applause, and the mummy moaned.
"But, so is our adversary," the vampire continued.  "We must be ever ready for an attack."

The mummy moaned again.
The vampire rolled his eyes and started to continue, but he was interrupted.

"Ho. Ho. Ho."

Monsters sprang to action looking for the evil man in red, Santa.  The witch whistled, and her broom flew to her.  The pumpkin head bounced toward its body.

The vampire was on the verge of turning back to a bat when he realized the attack had not come.  He raised his hand to quiet the crowd.  The mummy's outstretched arms pointed towards a window freshly adorned with a Christmas wreath.  The monsters moved to the next window, but it had been tagged with a wreath too.  This was clearly a Christmas spirit attack.  The monster looked around the room, but there was nothing.  Something outside flickered off and on playing with the shadows on the wall.  The windows were bordered with Christmas lights.

The werewolf howled, and the zombie bit at the other monsters in an attempt to keep the warm fuzzy feeling of Christmas joy from choking the fright from their beings.

A doorbell chimed, and the monsters jumped.  The vampire walked over to the door.  All of the monsters knew the meeting hall wasn't equipped with a doorbell, but they stayed silent.  The vampire slowly opened the door to reveal a trio of children dressed in snow covered winter clothes down to hand knitted scarves and mittens. The smallest child, a little girl with pigtails, even wore earmuffs.  The cuteness confused the monsters, and when they realized they'd sprung a Christmas trap it was too late.  The children broke out in perfectly adorable out of tune caroling that collapsed the monsters to their knees with their hands clasped over their ears howling and moaning.  All would have been lost, but the flying broom whisked the witch away, and it dropped her in a far corner safe from the noise and sped away, only to return a moment later with the mummy, who of course moaned.

"He's no help in times of trouble," the witch said to the broom.  "Get me someone else on the double."

The broom floated up horizontally, but instead of taking off, it used its handle to rip off the bandages covering the mummy's mouth.

"Ohhhhh. . .  Why thank you kind sir," the mummy said to the broom.  I am already eternally in your debt for releasing me from the bonds that hindered my speech, but I am still in dire need of your assistance."

The witch stared with her mouth open, but the broom snapped to attention with its bristles planted on the ground and its handle sticking straight.  The mummy nodded to the broom, and widened his stance a little.  The broom rose up a few inches then zipped between the mummy's legs and rose up, but with the mummy's body still stiffened by bandage, he started to tip over. The broom lowered the mummy back to the floor.

The mummy turned to the still stunned witch.  "Ma'am, I will need your support to stay balanced."

He pointed to the back of the broom and the witch hopped on and grabbed the mummy's shoulders.

When both riders were secure, the broom zipped towards the door, the other monsters, who were fading fast, and the carolers.  When the broom reached the singing children, it slapped them silly with its bristles, and the witch slammed the door shut.

In an instant the broom, mummy, and witch were hovering over a quaint Norman Rockwellish town in the middle of the holiday season.

"It’s Halloween night.  I fear we've lost the fight," said the witch.

"I know the situation looks dire," said the mummy.  "But I have devised a plan that just may.  Broom, we need to find the sleeping locales of this town's children."

Back at the meeting hall, the carolers rang the doorbell over and over, but the monsters there would not open the door.  They were crammed against the wall on the opposite side of the room.

"What is wrong with you things?"

The monsters frantically scanned the room, but no one saw where the question came from.

"Who said that?" The vampire asked.

"I did."

The monsters turned their eyes to the bed, and for the first time in centuries, Something under the bed crawled from beneath the bed.  Most of the monsters had never seen it, and they were taken aback by the tiny mushroom shaped monster with arms and legs only a few inches long that appeared to be covered in bright red shag carpeting.

“You’re freaking monsters. I mean you literally eat kids like the ones out there for lunch or a midnight snack depending on circumstances.”

The other monsters started to protest, but Something marched to the door.  His little arm grew out and stretched to the door knob.  The werewolf howled in anticipation of the torture to come. Something pulled the door open, but before the kids could break out in melody again, his mouth spread open like his arm had grew and he swallowed one of the children.  At first everyone and everything just sort of looked at each other.  Then the monsters attacked.  They turned, sucked, ate tore apart each of the annoying little kids.

After the mayhem was over and no unturned kids stood, the monsters let out a sigh of relief.  Something closed the door and headed back under his bed.

The monsters bragged, howled, moaned, and made all sorts of other noises about the massacre that had just occurred.  They were debating and deciding not one of them had really ever been scared, when the doorbell rang again.  This time the monsters fell over each other to be the first to answer it.  The goblin got there first and yanked it open ready to attack, but there were no children it was Santa and a mob of elves.  The monsters stepped back, and Santa and his elves stepped in the room.  The two groups stared each other down. Neither side dared blink. Then Santa broke the silence.

“This is foolish.  We’ve won. Take a look outside.”

The monsters headed to the windows and looked outside to see the snow covered streets, candy cane decorated light posts, and Christmas lights strung up everywhere.

“But it’s Halloween,” said the zombie.

“Not any more. Ho! Ho! Ho! No longer will you have your night of tricks or treats, such a selfish night. Soon peace on Earth and goodwill towards men will rule all year round.”

The monsters’ faces and bodies sunk in defeat.

“We’ve lost our night,” the vampire said.

He transformed to a bat ready to fly off then the doorbell rang.

“Oh joy, more carolers,” Santa said.

He motioned an elf to open the door, and the monster sank toward the back of the room.  The open door was filled with three kids, but they were dressed like a turtle, a princess, and a wizard.  Before Santa could say a word, all three kids blustered out.

“Trick or Treat!”

An elf slammed the door closed.

“I guess we can’t reach every child,” said Santa. “But rest assured this night is mine, now.”

The doorbell rang again.  This time Santa opened it to find a find a brown paper bag on fire. He started stamping out the fire and had already stomped several times before realizing the bag was filled with dog poo.  The monsters howled with laughter, and another set of costumed children stepped up to give the option of trick or treat.  Santa and the elves stepped back, and the kids stepped in the room.  They were followed by more kids and more kids and more kids.

Soon the room was filled with children chanting “trick or treat” over and over.

“Enough!” Santa said. If you all want to play this game, fine, I’ll put you all on my naughty list.”

“And that, my worthy adversary, is why you will never take over Halloween,” the mummy said as he stepped into the door way with the witch and broom.

Christmas and Halloween characters turned towards him as he continued.

“At first this battle seemed hopeless, but after we explained to the children that they'd have to be good from October through December and maybe longer to get of presents they may not want, it became quite evident that the world still needs Halloween. Of course, the lure of free candy was very beneficial too.”

The monsters and children took a step towards Santa and his elves who took a step back. Santa and the elves leaped through the windows and took off running through the streets, and the monsters and children laughed till they fell over.

After the laughter was over, one of the children called everyone to a broken window.  The night was now dark minus a full moon, and jack o’ lanterns decorated porches everywhere.  The monsters were so overjoyed they let the children go, and the witch gave each one a candied apple for a treat.

Of course, the next morning all the children woke up as frogs, for the apples were cursed.

The Hunger Games: The Movie

I'm pretty sure, if you read and liked the book, you will enjoy this movie, but if you have not read or disliked the book, the movie probably won't be your thing.
The basic plot goes like this: In a dystopian future, two adolescents from 12 areas are chose via lottery to participate in a sort of battle to the death. The last one standing is declared the winner. The main character of the story, of course, ends up in the games. Plot wise there is nothing original about the Hunger Games. What makes the book so good to me, is the resolve of Katniss and her relationships with the other characters in the story. A lot of these parts of the story are developed in the mind of Katniss through her thoughts and memories (flashbacks). You may be wondering. What does this has to do with the movie? Well, while I enjoyed the movie and felt a lot of the same emotional connection between the characters, I believe it was from my reading of the book. I do not think the movie did a good job with this. Instead it seemed to be in a rush to get to the action and visually more appealing scenes. One thing the movie does offer, is a lot of interesting scenes the book could not, being a first person affair. To me this added to the stories overall milieu. I found the movie pretty well acted too. With Jennifer Lawrence doing a fine job as Katniss. The special affects looked good and realistic to me. Seeing "the girl on fire" scene at the opening ceremonies was a nice bit of visual candy for me My overall opinion of the movie. Good.

Haters Going to Hate

So I've been watching the news on the anti American rallies in the middle east. Before I go off on any rant, I want to say wow Libya, and thank you.  To me the people of Libya have done two things. First, they've encouraged me that some people really  that need the help and appreciate when it's given.    The second thing shown was a place where the Muslim extremists are a minuscule minority and most of the people want freedom.

The people rose up and fought back against the extremists. It warmed my heart to see the hand made signs denouncing the violence. Unfortunately, with this encouraging light has came some sobering revelations. The first whoever is in charge of this stuff messed up big time . We were unprepared on 9/11. I'll let you read that again. We were unprepared on 9/11. The second thing is there are groups, even countries that hate us no matter what we do. America has tried several methods in dealing with extremists groups. It never matters, they hate us and want us dead. That's all I got to say on this

Monday's Moaning

Nothing much to complain about this week ever. One thing that has really annoyed me lately is the introduction of fact checkers into every political speech given.  Thanks for letting me know that politicians exaggerate, twist facts around, and sometimes out right lie.  Have a great week everyone.

CODE GEASS: LELOUCH OF THE REBELLION

Japan has been conquered by the British Empire. That is the premise of this alternate world, fantasy, mech, anime. They haven't just been conquered. Britain has stripped all their national identity and subjugating the people to second class citizenship. There are Japanese (or elevens as they are identified in the anime) who rebel and fight against the tyranny of the empire, but their guerrilla tactics have little effect. That is until a young man is given a mysterious power. When LeLouch is given the power to make people do anything he wants as long as he makes direct eye contact, it almost seems like destiny. Not only does he hate the British Empire, but he has both the brilliant strategic mind and the charisma needed to lead the rebellion against them.

That's the best spoiler free synopsis I can give of CODE GEASS: LELOUCH OF THE REBELLION. My initial thoughts of the first few episodes were "wow!" That wow stayed with me for the first season. The anime asks a lot of questions about what's right or wrong and how much do motives play a part in these answers. This leads to some brilliant storytelling and excellent character development, though I did find some of the minor characters kind of pointless. Then came the second season. I'm not sure if the creators behind this anime were told this would be their last season, but the second season seemed rushed leaving me scratching my head over many plot developments. That being said, I still recommend it pretty highly. The overall story overcomes the head scratching moments, and the art remains strong throughout despite the characters being draw painfully thin. I especially liked the colors.

My verdict for CODE GEASS: LELOUCH OF THE REBELLION is watch it if you like anime.

Monday's Moaning

I will normally use Monday to pick subjects to voice my displeasure over, but on holidays I think I'll keep it positive. Today is Labor Day, so I'm trying to follow my annual tradition of doing as little as possible. I wish all who read this a great day.

baby geese, published story

Okay so I slept most of Monday. Well, Monday morning, then I found out my short story, "Aamon is Watching has been released.  if you want please buy it. http://www.bookstogonow.com/aamon.html
I know a shameless promotion, but it is my blog.
On the way to work I passed a flock of baby Canadian Geese they were walking around exploring the world. They didn't have feathers yet, so I'd bet they hadn't been out of there nest very many times.  During the whole time I observed the babies, I noticed the momma geese keeping her eyes on me. Occasionally she'd jerk her head up and down as a warning.  I tried to tell her I meant no harm, but my goose is a little rusty.
Ive overslept the past two days, throwing my body and schedule out of wack. I'm glad to be getting a four day weekend.
Ahh first day of a long 4 day weekend was so nice. I slept in took the park and got some writing done at the library. I think the president of the United States is a clone, or I guess I should say presidents The one who campaigns who they've recently been letting out a bit more. (His handler's need to tell him it's not 2008 anymore.) Then you have the one who has been governing the last almost 4 years. I was asked to write an article offering writing advice for the Seattle Examiner website. I need to do that over the weekend. I'm not exactly sure what advice to offer though.< I'm thinking of going to see a movie today or tomorrow it's either that or a haircut. If you read this don't forget to get my story http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0084J7JNU Thank you for your support :)

Wow! Been one hell of a morning. The place I cash my checks opened an hosur late. Someone didn't show up to open. The lady who did show up was on time, so I couldn't even vent my frustration. Okay, I could have, but she didn't deserve it. Lady seemed pretty frustrated as it was. The funny thing is after I forced a smile and pretended the wait was no big deal, I kinda felt like smiling, and the wait was no big deal. My local save a lot is charging for the use of their shopping carts. It's just a quarter, but it just seems silly. If you like basketball, how about that clippers/grizzlies series? Every game right to the end I got my edits back for my story that was accepted by books to go now. I'm excited for it to come out. Ive never been paid for my writing, and it's stirring a lot of emotions knowing it's about to happen. I'm reading my friends self published novel When Darkness Comes This Way. There's a lot to like, and a lot to go hmmm about. Boo! NC for passing that stupid law banning gay marriage. The name of the wind, The kingkiller chronicle: Day one is a very fine book. It's by Patrick Rothfuss and if you like high fantasy, I strongly recommend you check it out. Pawn Stars is a pretty great show. I lost my prepaid credit card a couple weeks ago, so I sent for a replacement card. Now that card has not shown up. I'm out a few hundred dollars at the moment. Ugh. I worked Sunday. I had to get up extra early to go in, and I was really tired. The funny thing is that I will forget all about that come next week when I get the extra money on my check. That is all.

what's up

Hello possible reader, I'm sorry I've been away. Life's bee very twisty lately. I'm hoping for a little calm, so I can catch up on some things. I'm watching an infomercial on a butt work out. You can get a sexy butt in 60 days :) There is no war on women. That is all. I watched a movie called My Name is Kahn. I highly recommend it. Ive decided to go see a live play this year. I'm not sure which one, but id really like to attend something. Basketball playoffs started today. GO THUNDER. The president ate a dog? I need to stop hearing half the news. Support Indie creators, but make sure it's quality. :) I added a new chapter to my Dragon Wars novel. I'm on chapter 12. Wow can you believe it. One of the members of management where I work is returting today after a pretty massive heart attack and surgery. He's a pretty big asshole at the job sometimes , but its great that he's okay. I'm going to experiment a little with how I review books in my other blog. Some members of the occupy movement tried to blow up a bridge close to where I live.

My week

My week is starting with me having to get ready for work on a Sunday with very little sleep.  I just hope it is an easy day. I've decided to post this blog once a week no matter what I have. Over the weekend, I finished a short story. I need to revise it some, but I'm going to submit it to an alternative history anthology. My worst day ever story got rejected, but I submitted it again to a place that focuses more on humor pieces.  I think the story is pretty funny myself.  I wanted to submit more, but couldn't find any more story/market matches.
Okay a few words while I sit in the break room at work.  A cheers rerun is on the TV. I forgot about the show, but now I miss it.  It's funny how many things I enjoyed that now have no significance to me.
I'm about half way through my day.  I'm doing my best to stay busy.  It's snowing here. I believe when I get off I'm going to change the climax to my bunny story.
Settling down for lunch.  I just listened to a conversation about the world ending.  it was pretty interesting back and forth between a doomsday prophet, and a more whatever happens happens type.
I'm home now watching a Lakers and Heat basketball game. After the horrible things liberal commentators have said about various women, the left's "righteous " anger over Limbaugh's stupid comment is comical. The comment did upset me though. First it was wrong a woman should not be called that. Second, name calling automatically invalidates your argument in a way.

I woke up late on this Monday morning.  That sucked I had things I wanted to do this morning before work, and I have to go in an our early. I skipped a lot of my morning ritual to get to the library and do some writing. A week after the Chardon school shooting. It seems forgotten.
I'm laying in bed typing on my kindle fire. I had some thoughts about something earlier, but I forgot them. Work got a little hectic. To make a short story microscopic, I'll give y'all the last sentence. Then the doors blew open, and 25,000 lbs of flour went everywhere. The NCAA men's basketball tournament is coming up real soon I can't wait. Oh wow, I just remembered, my sister's birthday is today. It's kind of funny going by the super Tuesday polling places and seeing no one there. Republicans are few and far between where I live. My Worst Day Ever story got rejected again. It's March 7 now. Alexander Graham Bell patented the telephone today. Unexpected things are happenings at work today, and I'm taking care of it. Word of advice: be careful what you let people know you can do. My wifi is out at my house. I hope it's back on when I get off work. Ever since I accepted the fact I will never be a great writer, I've got a lot more out of my writing. I keep striving to get better, but knowing my Limitations is very liberating.

I am posting this blog today because I am enjoying a day off.

Bus driver commentary

I stepped on to the city bus and took my seat. The driver pulled away from the curb, and I assume continued a string of running commentary she'd been entertaining her passengers with for hours.

"He won't talk to you unless you got money. He thinks he's white."

"Some people would be happy to go to prison. Least there they get three meals a day."
(This one is sad cause it's true for some.)

"I saw a t shirt that says we should bomb Obama. That's wrong to talk about bombing people. They should bomb Bush."
(I scratched my head on that one.)

Things I'll be writing next week

These are the stories I'll be working on the week of Jan 29-Feb 4

My main focus will be on a yet to be named short story that focuses on a little boy whose dad just lost his job. My goal is to show how the sudden changes and extra stress effect and confuse him. I'fe had a little trouble with this one, but I think it's finally revealed its tone to me

2. The second one is for a short story anthology that's going to feature alternative history stories with a historical bent. I'm going to wait to reveal the subject, but I'll say it features rabbits

3. The almost final story is the 13th chapter of Dragon Wars. I think this one may take awhile. I want to dig deeper into the characters, introduce the magic (it has actually been there for awhile, but it's not obvious unless you know,) and I want to show the dragons are more dangerous and on their way.

I know what you're thinking. What did he mean by almost final? I've pulled out an old graphic novel story and started tinkering. I'll have more details later

Recent loves and hates

I thought it would be nice to share a few things I've bought or watched and let the world know if I loved them or hated them.

I recently finished watching 07Ghost (what's available on cruncyroll.) It was bad. The story was confusing and random with horrible pacing. The characters were stereotypes, and the big climatic battle of what I watched turned out to be an illusion that didn't really happen. 07 Ghost makes my hate list

I recently watched The Trip, a British comedy about a trip. It's, but the characters are real sort of along the same vein as Curb Your Enthusiasm. Though there is no real plot to speak of the characters, their banter, and interactions made it a pretty enjoyable movie. This is a movie I liked. (What? I can't love or hate everything :p)

Now to finish on a positive note, here is something I love my kindle fire. I know it's not a full blown tablet, but it runs great and does everything I need. Especially with the android market available. I just need to get more books on it. :)
